  2. LANtastic Z(TM) Serial/Parallel Local Area Network
  3.  
  4. Interconnect two PCs and enjoy all the features of a full-powered LAN without
  5. interface cards.  LANtastic Z doesn't need network cards. It lets you com-
  6. municate via existing serial or parallel ports on each PC, the same ports
  7. used to connect printers and modems.

  9. And whereas many "serial" or "zero-slot" LANs are just glorified file
  10. transfer programs that tie up your PCs while data is going back and forth,
  11. LANtastic Z is a true network. In fact, it's the same full-featured software
  12. that normally ships with Artisoft's LAN hardware, such as LANtastic 2Mbps and
  13. Ethernet adapters. Not only does LANtastic Z let you use your PC while the
  14. network works in the background, but it also gives you many more features
  15. than most other serial LAN products.

  28. LANtastic Z software comes on one diskette accompanied by a step-by-step
  29. user's manual. And LANtastic Z's install program automatically installs most
  30. of the network software.

  32. Modem Support permits remote access.
  33. Use your modem at home to remotely access a computer at your office. With
  34. LANtastic Z, your PC at home can share all the office computer's resources --
  35. files, programs, printers, a CD-ROM and more.

  37. Connect a laptop to a network server.
  38. By using LANtastic Z to connect a laptop computer to the serial or parallel
  39. port on a desktop computer, the laptop can access all the desktop's re-
  40. sources, such as files, programs, and printers.

  57. LANtastic Z offers several levels of security. Username with password. And
  58. Access Control Lists which define user access with the following access
  59. types: Read, Write, Create, Delete and Rename files, Make, Delete and Lookup
  60. Directories, Execute programs, and Change file attributes. You can limit a
  61. user's access to certain hours during the day.

  63. Use easy-to-follow "audit trails" for accounting and billing.
  64. LANtastic Z's audit file capability lets you monitor all access to sub-
  65. directories and printers. This means you can know who used a PC, printer or
  66. other device, when they used it, and how long they used it. You also know if
  67. someone attempts to enter "locked" directories. Or exactly how many char-
  68. acters a printer printed. LANtastic Z can audit access of the items defined
  69. in the printer sharing section above whether allowed or denied. The name of
  70. the user and the computer he was using, as well as the time an operation was
  71. performed, is logged to the server.

  73. Chat and send electronic mail.
  74. With LANtastic Z's "Chat" feature, one PC can send a message to the other PC,
  75. and the message will be instantly displayed on the other PC's monitor. The
  76. other PC can give an instant reply -- just like a conversation. LANtastic Z
  77. also has a built-in text editor that makes sending small messages simple.
  78. Binary files such as programs or databases can also be sent.

  81. Since LANtastic Z uses a small amount of memory, you don't have to buy extra
  82. memory to run it.

  85. LANtastic Z is compatible with DOS 3.1 and above, and supports DOS 3.1 file
  86. and record locking. Since almost all common software programs use DOS, the
  87. way they operate on your computers will not change after you install
  88. LANtastic Z.

  90. Run other NetBIOS-compatible programs.
  91. Netbios is an industry standard software interface that gives LAN appli-
  92. cations programs access to computer hardware. It is the most widely used
  93. interface in PC networking. Hundreds of network applications use it. Because
  94. LANtastic Z is NetBIOS-compatible, you can run hundreds of other NetBIOS -
  95. compatible applications programs on your LANtastic Z network. For example,
  96. you could run Artisoft's The Network Eye(C), which will enable you to control
  97. the keyboards and view the screens of both of your network Pcs using just a
  98. single PC.

  100. LANtastic Z gives you everything you need to link two IBMs or compatibles.
  101. LANtastic Z comes with two cables. You choose one of them - either the serial
  102. port cable or the parallel port cable. The LANtastic Z network kit also con-
  103. tains a step-by-step LANtastic Network Operating System user's manual, and
  104. software on both a 5.25" and a 3.5" disk.
